Columbia, SC – On February 27, 2008 from noon to 1:00 p.m., Dr. Stephanie Mitchem will discuss “Heroism and Community in A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines” as part of the Benedict College Big Read Program. This novel poses one of the most essential questions literature can ask: Knowing we're going to die, how should we live? It's the story of an un-educated young black man named Jefferson, accused of the murder of a white storekeeper, and Grant Wiggins, a college-educated native son of Louisiana, who teaches at a plantation school. |

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. Benedict College is one of 117 organizations that will receive significant grant support for Big Read programs. The Big Read at Benedict College was funded in the amount $20,000, half of which is supported by in-kind sources. The College will host campus and community programs for The Big Read from February 1 through March 22, 2008. As a grantee of the National Endowment of the Arts, Benedict College will join the national effort designed to help restore reading to the center of American culture. Using as its center for engagement Ernest Gaines A Lesson Before Dying, Benedict will engage South Carolinians with a number of interdisciplinary venues to encourage community reading and discussion. Book club program funded by Oprah’s Angel Network will target underserved, troubled teen populations CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, in cooperation with the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), is pleased to announce that applications for the Great Stories Club are now available at www.ala.org/greatstories. Applications from all types of libraries will be accepted through Feb. 1. Funding has been provided by a grant from Oprah's Angel Network. |
