The South Carolina Center for the Book is the South Carolina Affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book and is a cooperative project of the South Carolina State Library, the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science, and the Humanities Council SC. The Center is located at 1430 Senate, Columbia, SC, in the SC Center for the Book & Talking Books Reading Room.

Our Mission

The South Carolina Center for the Book celebrates South Carolina's rich literary heritage and brings public attention to the importance of books, writers and reading.

Our Vision

The South Carolina Center for the Book envisions a state where there is a community focus on the joy and value of reading.

Our Strategies

  • Provide a physical presence for the Center in the State Library.
  • Provide an examination sample collection of South Carolina materials collected by the State Library in the Center.
  • Develop an Advisory Council membership representing constituent groups to provide leadership in the areas of programming and projects.
  • Co-sponsor literary events, such as the South Carolina Book Festival, SC State Library's Read-In, Letters About Literature , and workshops.
  • Keep the citizens of South Carolina informed about state literary events and projects.
  • Produce and distribute a South Carolina Literary Map for distribution around the state and inclusion on the Center's site.
  • Form partnerships with state and local organizations who share similar goals and interests.
  • Promote literary programming in public libraries.
  • Give an annual award to honor organizations that promote the value and importance of reading.
  • Exhibit at literary events, such as book festivals, writer's conferences, and workshops.
  • Develop and distribute materials, such as the Literary Map, bookmarks and brochures.
